A note, from Hannie…

In May of 2023, my husband Gyula passed away.

My family and I experience his absence acutely every day.

Wherever we turn we are reminded of him, his design, his art; he was a man of integrity, honesty and he made it his lifelong commitment to keep us all safe and provided for.

He suffered from a very long, drawn out illness. It threatened his vigor, his stamina, at times his very will, that fiery energetic outlook on life.

Yet, despite it all, he managed to work when he felt strong enough, resting when he needed to. He was engaged in his art, in one way or another throughout, almost to the very end.

In January of ’23, we took his  collection of allegorical sculptures to the Bedy Makki Foundry in Brooklyn to be cast in bronze. The pieces were picked up in early May of that year, just in time for Gyula to look them over.  When he held those sculptures, our daughter Klara watched him… ‘Such a joy came over him, it was stunning” she said.

Here they are represented, a testament of a prolific life spent on creating beauty.

The Rape of Europa

Homage to Titian’s (1488-1576)  painting by the same name, painted around 1560-1562.

Leda and the Swan

After Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519)

The topic of Leda and the Swan was drawn from two different compositions by Leonardo between1503-1510. Neither survived as paintings. Gyula referenced his work from one remaining drawing by Leonardo and from copies by other artists of the vanished painting. He made two iterations, “Leda and the Swan, Standing” and “Leda and the Swan, Kneeling”.

Danae I & II

The topic if Danae in two variations, nursemaid with chalice and nursemaid with apron.

Inspired by Titian.
